The Vanishing City
Slow your pace. The city isn't going anywhere.
For the international student wondering what Taiwan actually is beneath the surface — for the traveler tired of "places to see" — this 200-year-old canal will not feel like sightseeing. It will feel like sitting with something that has been here a long time.
This is not a hiking event. It's a walk in conversation.
放慢腳步。台北不會跑掉。給想理解台灣的國際學生——這條 200 年的水圳不會像觀光,而是像在一個比城市更久的東西旁邊坐下來。這不是健行活動,是一場走著走著的對話。
Who You'll Walk With
PEVA's founding Lead Walker. Has lived across South America, Nepal, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States — then walked her way home to Taiwan. WFR · EMT-1 certified. Fifteen years of K-12 outdoor education across Taiwan. Pingding is the trail Jasmine returns to first whenever she comes back to Taipei.
- What does "near" mean for someone living far from home?
- When the summit isn't the point, what is the mountain for?
- How does a city remember where its water comes from?
Pingding Ancient Canal Trail
坪頂古圳步道
A forest path built around a 200-year-old irrigation canal — Taipei's gentlest hidden trail. Easy slope, dense shade, and a 30-minute drive from the city reveals a world that has been here longer than the city itself.
Trail highlights
For international walkers, age 15–25
- The kind of mountain that tires your body but loosens your mind — no shin splints, just the good kind of fatigue
- Taipei's hidden side that most exchange students never find — a story you'll bring home that no one else has
- Small cohort of 10–14 international walkers — meet people from a few continents in a single day
- Real conversation with Jasmine — fifteen years of walking, told one slow step at a time
